Twins slip by Lakers in Wood Bat championship game
The Daily Inter Lake
WHITEFISH - The Glacier Twins and Kalispell Lakers Class AA American Legion baseball teams battled it out for a tournament title for the second straight weekend Monday with Glacier prevailing this time, 4-3.
The Twins finished the seventh annual Wood Bat Tournament with a 3-1 record. They also beat Kalispell Friday night to open their tournament.
Last week, Kalispell downed Glacier 12-4 to win its Canadian Days Tournament in Kalispell.
"The kids really played smart, mental baseball today," said Twins coach Jarod Grubb.
"They had a little pep in their step."
Josh Peterson's SAC fly in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the championship game Monday with the Lakers at 1-all and forced extra innings.
After Kalispell scored twice in the top of the eighth, but Glacier came right back with three runs to win it.
Roo Grubb singled to right field to score Michael Hader with one out to win it.
Grubb was named MVP on tournament. He went 2-for-4 in the final, which included a triple.
Scott Palmer picked up the victory on the mound for Glacier.
On Sunday, the Rocky Mountain Bandits of Cranbrook, British Columbia, used a five-run fourth inning to spill the Glacier Twins 9-6.
Glacier took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth before the Bandits stormed back.
The game was called after six innings because of rain.
"We hung with them, scoring six runs on 11 hits," Jarod Grubb said.
"Pretty much everyone in the lineup was bringing out their rakes."
Roo Grubb went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. He doubled twice and also tripled.
Peterson and Zane Ridings both had two hits for Glacier.
On Saturday, Glacier pulled out a 3-2 victory over Trail, B.C.
"We got on the board early and we were able to make some plays," Jarod Grubb said.
Glacier scored twice in the second inning and added another run in the sixth. The Twins had just four hits in the contest.
Twins pitchers Justin Collom and Michael Hader combined on a 1-hitter.
The Glacier Twins are back in action Wednesday at Kalispell, 6 p.m.
