Peterson wins bull riding title

Zach Peterson did something the other nine finalists failed to do Saturday night in the short go of the Rocky Mountain Extreme Bull Riding Challenge at Majestic Valley Arena.

He stayed on for the full eight seconds.

The 17-year-old cowboy from Velva, N.D., posted an 80-point ride on Pine Ridge to win the second, and final performance.

"I rode him about as good as I could," Peterson said.

"He was real snappy. He jumped and kicked real hard."

Peterson advanced to the short go with a 77-point ride aboard Were wolf in the long go. That was the sixth best score in that session. He was also the last rider to go.

It was Peterson's second go with Pine Ridge.

"He threw me off at the whistle," he said.

"That was two years ago."

Peterson finished the two nights of bull riding at Majestic Valley Arena by covering three of his four rides. He turned in an 83-point score on Friday in the long go, which was the third best mark in that session. He got bucked off in the finals that night.

Peterson earlier this month won at Lewistown with an 85-point ride on a bull called Twister. He

rode two of three bulls at that event.

Prior to Lewistown, Peterson was ranked in the top five of the Badlands Professional Bull Riders Association circuit standings.

Jared Kiser of Kalispell had the best score in the long go on the final night with an 83 on a bull called Loose Change.

Robby Teinharra, also of Kalispell, had the other high score, an 82.

Eight cowboys posted scores in the long go. They moved on to the short go Saturday along with Travis Blue and Leroy Eash, who advanced on time.
