Edith H. Hurd, 98
Edith H. Hurd, 98, passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at the Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell.
She was born Nov. 1, 1908, at Kathryn, N.D., the daughter of Hubert and Eva (Helland) Peterson.
When she was a child, she moved with her parents to Montana to homestead 28 miles north of Havre. Edith had two younger brothers, and they attended a country school one mile from the Canadian border. She attended and graduated from Havre High School. She attended Kinman Business College in Spokane.
When she was 24 years old, she was married to Leo Wall at Cottonwood. He died very suddenly, a day before the birth of their daughter.
After the death of Leo, she continued working as an office worker for a government project when she met Verlin Hurd, a project developer for the Department of Agriculture. They were married in 1936 in Red Lodge and expanded the family with four more children.
She was a homemaker and raised five children. She also worked at Big Sandy Drug and Wells Drug in Shelby and later was manager of American Land and Title in Thompson Falls. She continued working and retired as a manager of a title company in Havre when she was in her 80s.
Edith also stayed busy with 4-H, Reliance Club, and Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed dancing and met both of her husbands at community dances. She learned to crochet when she was four years old and also knits.
She moved to Kalispell in 1997 to be closer to her daughters and became a resident of Immanuel Lutheran Home in 2004.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Big Sandy, Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Thompson Falls and was also a member of the Ladies Club of Thompson Falls.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Leo Wall, in 1936, and Verlin Hurd in 1983; her parents; brother, Russell Peterson; a granddaughter, Jennifer Taylor; son-in-law, Dean Taylor; son-in-law, Buster Buttram in December 2006; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Hurd, in June 2007; a sister-in-law, Helen Peterson.
She is survived by four daughters, Linda H. Taylor, and Sandra E. Olson and husband, Milton, all of Kalispell, Sharon G. Gatewood of Lexington, Ky., and Ruth A. Buttram of Greeley, Colo.; a son, Russell W. Hurd, of Glendale, Ariz.; and a brother, Arnold Peterson, and wife, Alice, of Havre; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services for Edith will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Christ Lutheran Church in Big Sandy. Urn burial will be in the Big Sandy Cemetery.
