Kalispell golfer holds 2-shot advantage in 70th Labor Day play

Larry Iverson III is in a familiar spot - he's leading another golf tournament.

The junior at Glacier High School, who has already been the medalist at two prep events this fall, blistered the Cameron 18 at Buffalo Hill Golf Club on Sunday, shooting a 6-under 66 for a 136 total and a two-shot lead on Shawn Tucker of Whitefish in the 70th annual Labor Day golf tournament.

"When I birdied (holes) two and three, I felt I had a chance to go low today," Iverson said.

"I just started out confident."

Iverson said he started sticking some shots later in the round, which left him with some short, makable putts.

Like on the par 4, 328-yard 18th hole. He hit the flag on the fly from 60 yards out on his second shot.

"It (ball) bounced eight feet away from the hole," Iverson said.

He then sank the putt for a birdie.

The lone rough spot, on what turned to be a very smooth round, came at the par 5, 466-yard 15th hole.

"Probably the easiest hole on the course," Iverson said.

"A birdie hole."

Not for Iverson this time around.

"I had a bad drive, hit it left into the trees," he said.

"I just couldn't find a way to score on that hole."

Tucker nearly matched Iverson's performance on the second day of play, carding a 67. He opened with a 71 for a 138 total.

Logan Lindholm of Kalispell is third, 71-71-142, and Ryan Santa, also of Kalispell, is fourth, 73-72-145.

Iverson opened the tournament on Saturday with a 70 on the Cameron Nine for a one-shot lead.

"I've put myself in a good position," Iverson said.

"We'll see what happens tomorrow. A lot of things can go wrong in golf."

But a lot of things can also go right, as they did for Iverson on Sunday. His 66 is his best round on the Championship 18.

"I'm on top of things," he said of his game.

"I was surprised I came in on the front nine today with a low score at 4-under (32) because that's usually the side you just try to get through it and score on the back nine. Today, it was just the opposite for me."

Iverson will tee off today at 11:30 a.m. on the Championship 18 with Tucker, Santa and Lindholm.

Iverson is competing in this tournament for the third time. He came in third last year.

In women's play, defending champ Gaylene Donald shot a 79 for a 164 total and an 11-shot lead on Debbie Boreson of Kalispell. Boreson, 89-86-175, is a former tournament champion.
