Great Falls golfer wins Flatfish
Whitefish's Sam Krause claims boys' tournament
It wasn't a matter of nerves, just a little bad luck for Morgan Lee.
"I started out with a triple (bogey)," the Great Falls High School golfer said.
"Went OB (out-of-bounds) on my second shot. I just needed to calm down and just play my game."
Lee, who topped the girls' leader board after Friday's play at Whitefish Lake Golf Course with an 83, posted an 82 on Saturday at Buffalo Hill Golf Club to win the annual Flatfish Invitational golf tournament.
"I got off to a rough start, but I settled down," Lee said.
"I made a lot of pars. I putted well today and that's what saved me. I wasn't hitting my driver as well as I normally do."
Kiley McConnell of Whitefish held on to the No. 2 spot. The freshman shot an 86 on Friday and followed with another 86 for a 172 total.
Julia DiGiallonardo of Polson came in third, 94-84-178.
Lee had just one birdie on the day. That came on the 353-yard, par 5 13th hole.
"I stuck my third shot from the trees to about three feet," she said.
"Then I made that putt."
Lee did not compete in this event last year because it conflicted with her school's homecoming weekend. She did finish 10th here her freshman year.
"Winning state," she said of one of her season goals.
"Just to play well; play the best I can."
Lee has been the top golfer for the Bison all season. She's been the medalist at two tournaments - Great Falls and Missoula.
DiGiallonardo, who won three tournaments in a row last week, finished this event on a strong note. The Polson junior shot a 2-over par 35 on the final nine that included a birdie. That followed a 45 on the front.
It was also a 10-shot improvement over Friday. She was tied for seventh place on the first day with a 94.
"Today was a lot better," she said.
"I put everything together. I had to come back on the last nine, though."
DiGiallonardo used a par on the ninth hole to get rolling.
"That turned everything around," she said.
"It's a good way to carry on to state. Hopefully everything will carry over."
Whitefish won the girls title, 721, with C.M. Russell second and Polson third.
Sam Krause shot a 73 at Whitefish Lake Golf Club on Saturday to finish the 36-hole tournament with a 140 total and a one-shot victory over Larry Iverson III of Glacier.
Iverson finished with a 76.
For the Class A schools in the field, this was also their divisional tournament. Krause was the divisional medalist and Whitefish defended its team title.
Jim Mee of Libby, who shot a 64 on Friday, finished with a 79 and wound up fourth overall.
Missoula Sentinel, 604, edged Glacier by seven shots for the Flatfish team title.
