Sawtelle resigns from FHS boys' soccer
Flathead High School boys' soccer coach Eric Sawtelle resigned this week after two highly successful seasons at the Braves' helm.
Sawtelle guided the Braves to a Class AA state championship two years ago, and they won one game at state last fall. Flathead finished first in the Western AA in 2006 and third in 2007.
"It was something I've been battling with, but I just felt like I was at the point where I just couldn't do enough, in my mind, teaching and coaching at the same time to appease my work ethic," said Sawtelle, who teaches science.
"Just to do the things I want to do teaching and to be a head coach, I felt I couldn't make it all work."
According to activities director Frank Jobe, Flathead has started its search for Sawtelle's replacement, but no one has been hired.
"It's gonna be tough to fill that spot," Jobe said. "He's a good guy, the kids like him, he works hard.
"People respect what he does and how he handles himself, so it's a sad day for us, that's definitely for sure."
Sawtelle said it was difficult to resign from a program with so many dedicated, talented players returning this fall.
"I hope to stay involved, and I'm definitely planning on it at this point," he said.
"I love these players, and talking to them this week has been heartbreaking. I'm still going to be a strong supporter in any way I possibly can."
