MISSOULA - Flathead head track coach Dan Hodge made one request of the athletes the Braves took to Saturday's Missoula County track meet.

He asked them to be competitors.

"I didn't want them to be participants. I wanted them to be competitiors - and I think they responded very well," Hodge said.

Indeed they did.

Although they won only three events, the Braves scored 119 1/2 points to easily outdistance second place Missoula Big Sky at 87. Great Falls Russell scored 67 1/2 points for third place. Whitefish scored 34 points, Columbia Falls 15, Eureka 11 and Glacier five points.

Among the girls, Missoula Big Sky easily outscored the competition with 122 points. Hellgate was second with 89 and CMR scored 67.5. Glacier was fourth with 60 points. Whitefish scored 31 points, Columbia Falls 23.50, Flathead 15 1/2 and Eureka had six points.

The bright spot for Flathead was senior Luke Fischer.

Fischer threw the javelin 199 feet, eight inches. That was good for first place - and for a new Flathead High School record. The old mark was 192-4, set in 2002 by Travis Lynch.

"It was a nice throw," Hodge said.

Flathead's other firsts came in the relays.

The 400 team of Sam Tedrow, Ian Damon, Mike Kozlowski and Charlie Dotson ran a 43.94, almost a second faster than second place CMR.

Three of those four guys also placed in the 100.

The 1,600 team of Mike Gallagher, Seth Svennungsen, Tedrow and Andrew Edsall won that event in 3:32, nearly two seconds faster than second-place Hamilton.

"I thought the kids were very competitive," Hodge said.

Glacier coach Jerry Boschee was also happy with what he saw from the Wolfpack girls.

The Glacier girls also won three events.

"We had some nagging injuries, so I was really thrilled with the number of points we scored. Given all the nagging injuries we had, we had some really good performances," Boschee said.

Neither Nicole Hall (sprints) or Janelle Hoover (javelin) were able to compete.

"We had two freshmen who really came of age today," he said.

"We kind of grew up a little bit."

Heather Fraley won the 1,600 and was second in the 3,200 and Rachel Cutler won the long jump at 16 feet.

Glacier's other first place win came in the triple jump - junior Kayla Smart went 36-1 on her second jump.

She hurt herself, though, so Boschee pulled her from the meet after that attempt.

"Our kids learned a little bit about a big meet and competition. This meet is so dang long. They were whipped. They were ready to go home," he smiled.

They'll be ready to go on Tuesday, though. That's when they take on Flathead in a dual at Legends Stadium.
