Flathead blankets Glacier

Braves, Bravettes notch sweep

The blankets you could explain.

But the slippers?

Well, that's another story.

Track athletes from Flathead and Glacier high schools were either huddled under blankets or wrapped up tightly in them Tuesday at Legends Stadium in an effort to stay warm.

With a gusty wind testing the nerves and competitive spirit of athletes and coaches for much of the meet, and temperatures in the low 40s, the two Kalispell schools held their first crosstown meeting.

Flathead took top honors in both, winning the boys' competition quite handily - 116-29 - while the FHS girls pulled out a tight one - 74-71.

"Both teams are just happy we got the meet in without any moisture," Flathead boys' coach Dan Hodge said.

"It was cool and windy. Predictions were for rain."

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Flathead's Josh Harris and Glacier's Emilee Hashley weathered the storm, so to speak.

Harris turned in a strong peformance in the shot put, registering his best distance of the season - 48 feet, 6 1/2 inches.

"A PB (personal best) by about a foot," Harris said of his winning effort. "I'm always looking to improve.

"It wasn't too bad," Harris said of the throwing conditions."It would have been nicer if it was warmer."

Harris said he stayed warm by running sprints.

"He's just getting such a nice extension and follow through with it," Harris' throws coach Bob Raeth said.

"I think Josh is just scratching the surface."

Harris' other bests on the day were 47-7 and 47-6 1/2.

"Those are all his top throws of the year," Raeth said.

"Maturity with good strength."

The strength part comes from lifting. Harris, who will play football this fall at Montana, is following the Grizzlies' conditioning program.

"I've been lifting all spring," he said. "The Griz set up a training program I've been following. It's helped me quite a bit."

Harris also won the crosstown discus with a throw of 155-3. That was four feet off his season best.

Hashley was a double winner in the same two events. She threw the discus 108-2 and the shot put 36-7.

"First time I did the rotation (in the ring)," Hashley said. "I threw 108. It was exciting."

It was also very productive. She did the rotation on three of her throws.

"There is nothing to be embarrassed about," was the words her throws coach Dirk Neibaum gave to her about trying the rotation for the first time in a meet.

"You are going with friends."

Hashley said she was very encouraged with the end results.

"It was good," she said. "I've been working on it all week, so it was good getting a good distance. Now I know I'm doing it for a good reason."

Hashley is eyeing the 40-foot mark in the shot put and the 130-foot barrier in the discus and javelin.

She placed third in the javelin with a distance of 102-1.

"I feel more comfortable with a smaller meet," Hashley said. "Bigger meets, I tense up."

Other double winners on the day were Flathead's Seth Svennungsen, 800 (2:08.81) and 1,600 (4:48.67); Abbie Foley, 100 (18.06) and 300 (55.01) hurdles; and Glacier's Heather Fraley, 800 (2:29.60) and 1,600 (5:36.56).

Hodge said Sam Tedrow's 20-11 1/2 long jump "is a good jump. I was really happy with Justin Kersteter (165-9 javelin). That's a career best. Harris had a nice shot put."

For the record, the Flathead boys won 14 of 17 events. The Flathead girls won eight.

"Not any huge things, just solid performances all the way around," FHS girls' coach Kirtlye Lohoff said.

"Especially for it being cold and windy."

Lohoff said some of the athletes grumbled about the conditions.

"A little bit, but it could have been worse. Actually, they were pretty good about it.

"They liked seeing their friends, knowing the people they were running against," Lohoff added.

"It was friendly competition."

Oh, yes, the slippers.

Glacier girls' coach Jerry Boschee was informed by one of his runners that they kept her feet warm.

Oh, well … whatever works.
