Flathead rallies to win Swede Dahlberg Invite
The Daily Inter Lake
BUTTE - All the other teams had left.
The Helena Capital Bruins were headed home Saturday with what they thought was a slim victory over the Flathead Braves at the Harry "Swede" Dahlberg Track Meet here.
Flathead was the last team left in the parking lot.
That's when Flathead pole vault coach Leon Wilcox approached Braves head coach Dan Hodge and said he thought there was an error in the pole vault results.
"We were getting ready to leave," Hodge said.
"We thought we were in second place. All the teams were gone," he said.
But Wilcox suggested "'we might check the pole vault results because I'm almost positive (Chris) Ruby was fourth and not sixth.'"
Off the bus they went. They found Butte coach Charlie Merrifield, who graciously pulled the pole vault card.
Sure enough, Ruby was fourth - and those points put the Braves in front of Capital.
Flathead finished with 115 1/3 points. Capital had 113 1/2 and Helena High finished with 71 points.
"That's why you have assistant coaches. Things like that happen accidentally," Hodge said.
That was just the final lift Flathead got on Saturday.
With four events - 200, triple jump, shot put and 1,600 relay - to go, the Braves trailed Capital by 14 points.
Charlie Dotson and Ian Damon went 1-2 in the 200 to score 18 points, Josh Harris beat out Big Sky's Beau Danielson and Capital's Louie Blood to win the shot, Sam Tedrow placed second in triple jump, and the 1,600 relay team (Michael Gallagher, Seth Svennungsen, Tedrow, Andrew Edsall) edged out Capital.
"Probably my hero of the day would be Sam Tedrow," Hodge said.
Tedrow scored 23 of Flathead's points. He was a leg of both winning relays, won the long jump (20-9) and was second in triple jump.
"He had to run triple jump immediately after running his leg of the 1,600 relay. He had no break. Really nice performance by him in not such nice conditions," Hodge said.
Three teams pulled out of the meet - both Great Falls schools and Bozeman.
"I think tomorrow they'll be sorry," Hodge said.
"We had just a little of (snow), but other than that, it was cool, but it wasn't wet.
"Butte runs a beautiful track meet. It was nice for everybody because we completed a full track meet with a lot of good competition."
