Snow slows road work in Glacier

More than a week of foul weather set back road-plowing efforts in Glacier National Park, but there's a sunnier outlook for the park this weekend.

Hikers and bicyclists can travel on Going-to-the-Sun Road beyond the gate at Lake McDonald Lodge.

Saturday through Monday, they can travel more than 11 miles up to the Loop area, where snowplows are digging into snow up to 10 feet deep.

Through much of this week, however, plows were diverted to the Apgar and Lake McDonald Lodge areas because of poor weather conditions farther up the road.

A little more than five miles of Sun Road is open from St. Mary to the Rising Sun area, where there is a vehicle gate. Plows have yet to work beyond Rising Sun because the east-side road crews have been working in the Many Glacier area.

Many Glacier area was hit with snow and wind last weekend and much of this week.

Some areas had to be replowed because of drifting snow and there is still six feet of snow at the Many Glacier Ranger Station. The road into Many Glacier will remain closed this weekend.

The National Weather Service is predicting more snow in Glacier Park today, but the weekend forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 40s to mid-50s.
