Braves bounce back at Mining City Duals

FHS rally after early loss at Mining City Duals; Glacier endures a rough start

BUTTE - A bad morning, a quiet bus ride and a big rally.

That sums up the Flathead wrestling team's day at the Mining City Duals in Butte.

The Braves got off to a rough beginning, losing their first dual 38-36 to Bozeman on Friday.

But after returning to their hotel and building a new game plan, the Braves rallied with a pair of resounding victories. They defeated Hardin 81-3 and Polson 74-3.

"It was a super slow start. Bozeman got the ball rolling. We dug ourselves too big of a hole to get back into it. It was definitely a learning experience," said Flathead coach Matt Owen.

Flathead still had chances to win in that dual - a pin instead of a decision at one weight class or simply not being pinned at another weight class would have given the Braves the victory.

The Braves returned to their hotel after that first loss.

"They weren't happy. It was a pretty quiet bus ride," Owen said.

He and the Flathead seniors had a meeting and came up with a game plan for the next two duals.

"They responded really well. Two really, really strong duals. I'm definitely happy they could bounce back from something like that," he said.

Tanner Beaman and Bryce Stacy led the Flathead charge.

Beaman (135) and Stacy (160) each pinned all three of their opponents.

Stacy was on the mat for a total of two minutes, 32 seconds.

"He dominated every match he was in. Really solid matches," the coach said.

Beaman got his first pin of the day after Flathead had lost six straight to Bozeman.

"He switched the momentum a little bit," Owen said.

Flathead will take on Billings Skyview at 9 a.m. today.

"Skyview is looking tough. We're going to have to have a great dual to pull that one off. We can't have another morning like we did today," Owen said.

Glacier also went through a tough first day.

It lost its first dual to Dillon, 43-42, then fell 44-39 to Sidney and finished the day with a 67-15 loss to defending Class A state champion Havre.

"It was kind of a downer in the morning," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.

"We started off probably taking Dillon a little too lightly. We came out a little flat, got into a hole right away."

The Wolfpack trailed 30-0 before making a run.

Glacier actually led Sidney going into the final match - and was up 7-4. But a pin cost the win.

"But the way they competed against Havre … we just wanted the kids to not back down and they didn't," he said.

"We saw a lot of positive things there. It's something we can build on," he said.

"When they came out and competed, it was exciting to watch. We were excited about the way they wrestled," Fischer said.

Glacier begins its day with Anaconda at 1:30 p.m.
