Braves qualify 29, Wolfpack 17

HELENA - Forty-six wrestlers from Kalispell will be heading to next weekend's All-Class State Tournament.

The Flathead Braves qualified 29 - tying a state and school record - with 23 in today's semifinals - and the Glacier Wolfpack has qualified 17 - with five in the semis - at Friday's Western AA seeding tournament.

Flathead has two wrestlers in today's semifinals in each of the following weights: 98, 105, 112, 119, 140, 145, 152, 160 and heavyweight.

Today's wrestling begins at 9 a.m. at Helena Capital. The top eight in each weight class advance.

"We feel really good about our performance today," said Flathead head coach Jeff Thompson.

"We set ourselves up in great position. We as a coaching staff are pleasantly surprised with our second string guys. They really stepped it up today, came out firing away and won a lot of matches they weren't supposed to win," he said.

As a comparison to last year - the Braves sent 28 to state and had 18 in the semifinals.

Thompson complimented sophomore Caleb Allen-Schmid at 152. Allen-Schmid has been behind Tyler Wells all winter, but he stepped into his own Friday with a pin of No. 2 seed Scott Hickey of Missoula Sentinel.

Jonah Franchi (160) also beat a No. 2 seed as he claimed a one-point decision over Helena High's Matt Upham.

"He was just dominating the match and then pinned him. He wrestled really well. Outstanding performance," Thompson said.

As for the Wolfpack, it exceeded its expectations with its first-day performance.

It got rolling right away in the first round.

"Our kids were just winning one after another. It was just amazing," said head coach Mark Fischer.

Glacier's semifinalists are John Frandsen (215), Tanner Woodland (145), Jordan Nelson (130), Stormy Day (125) and Sam Overton (112).

The coach complimented the effort of Tanner Woodland.

"He's looking really tough right now. All those guys in the semis, they're looking really tough," he said.

A whole new problem has surfaced with Friday's success, though.

"We just kind of expected 8-10 kids," Fischer said.

In fact, when the Glacier parents were ordering shirts for the state tournament, they only bought a few.

"That's a good thing to worry about," he smiled.

"We felt really good going into this week. I thought everything was coming together at the right time … and the kids are still excited about wrestling," he said.

"We kind of directed the kids … you celebrate those times when you have success, but tomorrow is a new day. We can't be satisfied with going to state," he said.
