Valkyries bottle up St. Ignatius

BIGFORK - Alyssa Fierro and Kailey Fierro scored in double figures Saturday night as the Bigfork High School girls' basketball team overcame a shaky first quarter to pull away from St. Ignatius for a 53-29 victory in nonconference action.

Alyssa Fierro led the Valkyries with 12 points, followed by Kailey Fierro with 10, Avery Vogel with nine, Hattie Bowen with eight and Jaylee Haveman with seven.

The Valkyries (15-1) led 8-6 after the first quarter before scoring 17 points in the second frame to mount a 25-14 halftime advantage.

"We got a lot of good looks in the first quarter, we just started shooting better in the second quarter," Bigfork coach Nate Hammond said. "We didn't really change much."

Mattea Grant led Class B St. Ignatius with 15 points.

Bigfork (8-0 Northwestern A) resumes conference play on Thursday with a critical home contest against Whitefish (6-1 Northwestern A).

"I think it will be a hard-fought game," Hammond said. "(The Lady Bulldogs) definitely will be ready to go. They can still win the league and get the No. 1 seed (for the divisional tournament), so we know they'll be ready."

STEVENSVILLE - Flathead Valley Home School pushed its season record to 19-2 with a 16-point victory over Bitterroot Home School.

Charity Zemke led the FVHS scoring parade with a game-high 30 points. Shelby Sladek followed with 13 while Danae Sheeran and Jenna Sladek both added eight.

The Lady Crusaders outscored BHS 21-10 in the fourth quarter.

COLUMBIA FALLS - Jackie Mee and Brittany Martin combined for 48 points as Libby rolled to an easy Northwestern A victory.

Mee hit four treys in the contest and led all scorers with 28 points.

Martin was close behind with 20. She nailed five 3-point goals.

Laice Dedrick added 12 points for the Loggers (9-5 and 4-3).

Libby point guard Brooke Hageness led in assists, nine, and steals, five.

"I was just very happy with the way we ran our offensive sets," Libby coach Jim May said. "We got good shots and made them."

MISSOULA - Two free throws by Justin Reynolds with 12 seconds remaining broke a 53-all tie as Missoula Hellgate dropped Flathead in Western AA play.

Michael Gallagher's last-second shot fell short for fifth-ranked Flathead (10-4, 2-4).

Gallagher hit a 3-point field goal to give the Braves their largest lead at 43-39 with 7:45 left in play.

Gallagher finished with a team-high 16 points.

Brock Osweiler fouled out with 1:21 left. He had 13 points for the Braves.

Clayton Juneau scored 18 points for Hellgate (6-8, 2-6).

LIBBY - The scoring trio of Bryan Cooper, Joel Fuller and Jim Mee carried Libby to a Northwestern A victory over Columbia Falls.

Cooper finished with 16 points, Fuller was next with 15 and Mee added 12.

The Loggers hit 11-for-13 from the free-throw line, going 8-for-9 in the final quarter.

Chase Grilley had 20 points for Columbia Falls.

Libby led 20-16 at the half.

ST. IGNATIUS - Bigfork picked up back-to-back nonconference victories with the triumph over St. Ignatius.

Roland Benedict led the way for Bigfork (5-11) with 23 points. Garrett Pewe finished with 12.

On Thursday, Bigfork dropped Plains 52-33.
