George Campbell, 65

George Campbell, 65, a friend to many muzzleloader enthusiasts in the Flathead, passed over on Sept. 10, 2007, on the Boulder Road in Big Timber.

Born July 24, 1942, in Missouri, he was the son of Mary Susan And George Washington Campbell. He attended the University of Missouri and was a Delta Sigma Phi. Before moving to Montana, he was a bouncer at Whiskey a Go Go, owned a bar in St. Charles, Mo., and raced flat-track motorcycles.

He was an extra in several movies and was a hunter, fisherman and guide. He once rode a horse from the Canadian border to the southern tip of Mexico.

He was an inline racer and broke records at Bonneville Salt Flats and El Mirage Dry Lakes in California. As part of the Salt Circus racing team with the late Hank Lawshe of Kalispell, he raced a 1929 Ford Model A Roadster with a flathead motor. He held memberships in Bonneville Nationals, Southern California Timing Association, Nostalgia Drag Racing Association, Inliners International and was a lifetime member of National Street Rod Association.

As a member of the Weapons Collectors Society of Montana he was also a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed traveling to the National Rendezvous across the United States and operated the Medicine Springs Trading Post, dealing primarily in trade beads, and period guns and costumes. It was at one of these that he met the local Flathead Freetrappers, who remained his friends for more than 30 years. He attended numerous local shoots, trade blankets and gatherings.

He leaves behind his sister and her family in St. Charles. Locally he is survived by the remainder of the Salt Circus Racing Team, Kym Dimmer, Melanie Riedinger, Jared Lawshe, Jodi Marsh and Hawke Lawshe. He also leaves his godson, Jared Lawshe Dimmer, of whom he was very proud.

He was happiest in the mountains and lived his life to the fullest. He was a good man and a dependable friend. "He is in the wind."
