Braves move 14 to semifinals

Glacier advances 2 wrestlers to AA semis

BILLINGS - Don't count your chickens until their hatched. Don't take anything for granted and for goodness sake, don't get too excited.

But things are looking good for the Flathead Braves wrestling team at the All-Class State wrestling tournament.

With one day in the books, the Braves have scored 207.5 points. They have 14 wrestlers in the semifinals and 24 are still alive in the tournament.

Billings Skyview is currently in second place with 149 points, Great Falls High is third with 130 points and CMR is fourth with 85 points.

Glacier is in 10th place with 44 points and has two wrestlers in the semifinals.

As a reminder - at this point last year, Flathead had scored 171.5 points. It had 13 wrestlers in the semifinals, had 26 wrestlers still alive and led the tournament by 19.5 points.

The Braves went on to claim their second straight state championship and set a tournament record with 347.5 points.

"We're doing well, but we've got to continue to have a good day (Saturday)," said Flathead coach Jeff Thompson.

"We are in the driver's seat. As long as we just continue to wrestle well, we should walk away here with a great tournament," he said.

"All the big guns are wrestling well. But it's not over until they hand us the trophy."

Flathead wrestlers in the semis are Zach Reimnitz (98), Steel Hahn (105), Shawn Lau (112), Jeremiah Gaiser (119), Tanner Beaman (130), Brian Ham (135), T.C. Decker (140), Bryce Stacy (145), Ryan Thiel (145), Tyler Wells (152), Caleb Allen-Schmid (152), David Lau (160), Luke Fischer (171) and Tyler Thomas (heavyweight).

Glacier wrestlers in the semis are Stormy Day (125) and John Frandsen (215).

The semifinals begin at 9 a.m. today. The consolation semifinals are at noon, the consolation finals are at 3 p.m. and the championship finals are at 6.

"We had a great first round. The kids wrestled really well. We got lots of pins and we got a nice little cushion with the lead," Thompson added.

"We're just getting it done. It's the biggest tournament of the year for us, so everyone is trying to come out and go as hard as they can," said Wells.

But the Braves are also taking the tournament in stride, he said.

"We know that on any given day any team can be beat, so even though we've done pretty good this year, we don't feel comfortable where we are until we have that state championship in our hands," he said.

"We've had 28 kids score points for us," said David Lau.

"But from here on out, everybody has to wrestle tough. Take it one match at a time and wrestle as best they can. We can't take any matches for granted."

But Lau was willing to bask momentarily in what the Braves have accomplished so far this year.

"They're saying we're the greatest wrestling team to ever come out of the state of Montana. It's pretty awesome being a part of it," he said.

The day wasn't without it's disappointments, however.

"The quarterfinals, we started out like a ball of fire. We were just rolling and rolling and rolling … and then at 189, Ian (Damon) got upset. He was the No. 1 seed from our division."

"That hurt a little bit. The momentum changed," Thompson said.

Flathead lost two of the next three matches.

"You've got to expect the unexpected at the state tournament, with the emotions running high, you've got to get that momentum going."

As for the Glacier Wolfpack, coach Mark Fischer was pretty happy with what went on the first day.

"We're figuring some things out," he said. "We came in here with our 15 guys. It looked like

their eyes were just wide open. I watched them walk into the Metra … they were just looking around at how big this building is."

With two state placers and four wrestlers still in the tournament, he was counting the day as a success.

"Stormy (Day) has wrestled two really solid matches," he said.

Glacier's 215-pounder John Frandsen was the biggest surprise of the day. He defeated Flathead's Justin Waverek 7-4 in the quarterfinals.

"That (win) is going to keep a smile on my face for tonight," Fischer said.
