A 40-year-old Olney man and his dog were seriously injured after being struck by a train Saturday morning near Olney.

The accident took place at about 9:30 a.m. at the Radnor railroad crossing on Upper Stillwater Lake.

According to the Flathead County Sheriff's Office, the train conductor saw the man while the train was about a quarter of a mile away. The conductor blew the train's whistle and began braking. The man didn't move.

It took the train almost a mile to stop, officials said.

The ALERT helicopter took the man to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic.

Officials have not determined why the man was on the tracks.

His name is being withheld until his family has been notified.
