Mathison, Bates in AA state tennis semis
The Daily Inter Lake
BOZEMAN - Glacier High School is guaranteed a finalist in girls' singles play today at the Class AA state tennis tournament, but at a heavy price.
Cami Mathison battled her way into the semifinal round on Friday, while Liana Bates cruised past two foes to reach the same destination.
Mathison and Bates, however, are in the same semifinal today at 9 a.m. The winner moves on to the championship match.
"We looked at the draw Sunday when it came out and we knew it was a possibility," Glacier coach Josh Munro said.
"They were OK with it."
Mathison, a divisional runner-up, stopped Jenna Fiscus of Billings West, 7-5, 6-3, and Netti Dayhuff of Bozeman, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Mathison jumped out to 5-0 advantages in the first set of both matches before holding on.
"Just reminded her that she was playing a very streaky girl who was capable of hot streaks," Munro said of the match with Dayhuff.
"I told her just to stay patient and wait it out."
Bates, the divisional consolation champion, advanced by default over Risi Arguelles of Billings West and dropped Gigi Suarez of Helena High 6-1, 6-0.
Suarez upset the No. 1 seed from the West in her opening-round match.
Bates was leading Arguelles 6-1, 4-1 when Arguelles withdrew because of an asthma attack.
"A very solid all-around game," Munro said of Bates' play. "She played her ground strokes very well, was hitting crisp volleys and had good, consistent serves. She was just playing safe hits, error-free tennis."
Missy Harris of Billings Senior, a three-time state champ and undefeated in her prep career, also advanced to the semifinals.
"Both girls are playing great," Munro said. "Hitting great shots, going for it at the right time, keeping opponents off-balance."
Bozeman leads the team standings with 16 points. Great Falls High is second, 10, and Glacier shares third place with Billings West with eight points.
Bozeman also tops the boys' standings, 13, with Missoula Hellgate second, nine.
Flathead's Josh Brann and Cody Harrison advanced to the semifinals.
Brann and Harrison opened with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory and followed with another wild match, pulling out an 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Singles player Wes Mathison won his first match, but lost in the quarterfinals.
Flathead's other two doubles teams - Erik Skybak and Brett Harrison and Jordan Gentry and Shannon Ballard - lost in the first round.
Flathead's team score was not listed in the results.
