Pirates, Bulldogs win at Class A track

BOZEMAN - Every point counts.
That was no more evident than at the Class A state track meet at Bozeman High School this weekend as both the boys' and the girls' team titles came down to the weekend's final event.
Both meets finished late Saturday night after a long, rainy day. The final event, the pole vault, was moved indoors and started hours late.
Whitefish's Kaleb Prestegaard claimed second place in the pole vault to give the Bulldogs 59 points, three more than Corvallis.
Laurel was third with 44 points. Libby finished sixth with 34 points, Bigfork scored 28 points for seventh place, Polson's boys scored 21, Ronan scored 10 points and Columbia Falls nine points.
The Polson Lady Pirates trailed Belgrade by one point going into the pole vault, but Nicole Davey and Tara Johnson placed second and fifth in that event to help Polson slip in front, 75-66. Corvallis was third with 43 points.
Whitefish scored 24 points, Bigfork 20, Columbia Falls seven, Libby six and Ronan one.
For the Whitefish boys, it is their sixth Class A crown. They last won the title in 2006.
"Our kids overachieved down here in Bozeman. That makes it a really neat experience," said Whitefish coach Derek Schulz.
"I'm not sure if there's anybody who would have picked us to win. I was hoping to come home with a trophy. Sometimes, when you're expected to win, it's just relief.
"But when you win when you're not expected to, it's just neat to share with the kids," he said.
"We come to the pole vault, we're ahead by one point, Corvallis is second and we both have good vaulters. Basically, it came down to our vaulter versus their vaulter," Schulz said.
Prestegaard made 13 feet, 6 inches and 13-0, both on his second try. The Corvallis vaulter had a miss at 12-6.
"Everything else was a tie. We beat him out on misses," Schulz said.
"(Prestegaard) has a memory for a lifetime," he added.
"But basically, when you look through the list (of events), there's a long list of things that the kids really stepped up. They were small points, but every point matters," he said.
He pointed out Colt Idol's win in high jump, Aaron Tkachyk's long jump victory, Drew Coco finishing second in both the 1,600 and 3,200 and anchoring the third place 1,600 relay.
"We were third in the 400 relay. We were third in the 1,600 relay. I don't think anybody expected us to do that.
"I was really happy with our relays. They both overachieved. If not for that … a lot of these kids, they really have a piece of this thing," the coach said.
"A lot of unsung kids got a taste of what it's like to win a state championship."
