Kuennen signs with Bobcats
BOZEMAN - Lauren Kuennen, a senior at Whitefish High School, has signed a national letter of intent to compete for Montana State University this fall, Bobcat head coach Dale Kennedy announced Tuesday.
Kuennen will run middle distance/distance and cross country at MSU, according to a press release from the sports information department.
Last fall, Kuennen placed fifth at the Class A cross country championship, leading WHS to the state title.
"We think Lauren has outstanding potential at the middle distance/distance level," said Kennedy.
"When you start to look at her marks in the 300 hurdles and 400 meters, coupled by her performances in the 800 meters and mile (1,600), you start to see the possibilities for cross country and the steeplechase."
Last weekend, Kuennen finished third in 800 and 1,600 at the Class A state meet in Bozeman as the Bulldogs placed 10th overall.
"Lauren has a good blend of speed and endurance," Kennedy said.
"She comes from an outstanding program and she'll be able to come in and help both the cross country and track squads."
Kuennen's career best marks include 300 hurdles (46.95); 400 (59.0); 800 (2:21); 1,600 (5:18) and 3,200 (11:39).
In addition to her efforts on the track, she serves as vice president of the WHS student council.
"Another reason why we were attracted to Lauren is her ability in the classroom," Kennedy said.
"In addition, she has done a lot of volunteer work and she'll fit in very nicely with our athletic department's mission."
Kuennen is the fourth distance runner signed by Kennedy this year.
