West blanks Flathead in girls state soccer

GREAT FALLS - Billings West, for the second straight year, downed Flathead on the final day of the Class AA girls state soccer tournament to capture third place.
West rolled to a convincing win this time, 7-0.
"Our kids were so tired," Flathead coach Scott Warnell said.
"And they were a lot deeper than we were."
West scored early, nine minutes into play, and led 3-0 at the half.
"We made some mental mistakes there," Warnell said, "but the kids played hard."
Warnell said Heidi Windauer had a tremendous tournament.
"She kept pressure on the opponents' defense all tournament long, played her heart out.
"Also, our defense (played great). In three of the four games, we allowed four goals."
These two state rivals opened tournament play on Thursday with Flathead taking that match 2-1 in a sudden-death shootout.
Flathead finished the season with an 8-5-4 record.
"For being so young and to handle the state pressure the way they did, that was outstanding. Graduating eight starters from last year, to come back and get fourth at state again was a tremendous job by this team. They worked hard, improved from game to game," Warnell said.
Bozeman defended its title, downing Billings Senior 2-0 in the title match.
In boys play, Billings West stopped defending state champion Helena High 2-1.
Helena Capital downed Bozeman 4-2 in the consolation final.
