Baby shot in the face in Somers

A 1-year-old girl was shot in the face Tuesday afternoon near Somers, Flathead County Sheriff Mike Meehan said.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was in stable condition Tuesday evening at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

According to investigators, the girl was in a pickup truck at a construction site on Boon Road at about 4:05 p.m. Tuesday when she was shot once with a .22-caliber pistol.

The pistol was in the vehicle, Meehan said. A 2-year-old girl also in the pickup truck was not injured.

Investigators will obtain a search warrant for the truck and recreate witness statements to determine how the shooting may have occurred, Meehan said.

The girl's parents drove her from the Boon Road construction site, where the family is building a house, until they were met on U.S. 93 by an ambulance from the Kalispell Fire Department.
