It only took one meet, or 10.93 seconds rather, for Chris Wilson to earn himself a lane at the state track meet to defend his title in May.

The Great Falls CMR sprinter surpassed the new state qualifying standard of 11.3 seconds in a runaway victory in the 100-meter dash at the Flathead-CMR dual track and field meet on a clear day at Legends Stadium on Friday. The CMR boys won 88-57 and the girls won 76-69 in the first event of the year for both schools.

"I'm pretty excited, I seem to be improving," said Wilson, a senior who set the Class AA state record last year with a winning time of 10.82 seconds.

Wilson also won the 200 with a time of 21.96 seconds and then anchored the CMR 400 relay team with a state-qualifying time of 43.53 seconds. The mark time is 43.8.

Flathead freshman Tess Brenneman jumped her way into the state meet as well on a day where she went undefeated in four individual events and helped the 1,600 relay team win with a time of 4:19.35.

She qualified for state with a 5-foot-2 leap that surpassed the standard by 2 whole inches.

"Qualifying for state as a freshman in the first meet of the year, not too shabby," said Flathead girls head coach Kirtlye Lohof.

Brenneman also picked up victories in the 100 and 200 as well as the long jump. Her winning time in the 200, 26.78 seconds, was .28 seconds short of meeting the state-qualifying mark.

Flathead senior Heidi Windauer won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.09, outleaning CMR's Jordan Bagley by .05 seconds. Windauer also anchored the 1,600 relay. Kelsey Davis ran the first leg of the relay after winning the shot put with a throw of 30-6.

Flathead had another freshman take the stage as Paige Bouma broke the 6-minute mark in the 1,600 with a winning time of 5:57.33. Fellow freshman classmate Bailey Hughes took second, 6:01.25.

Flathead junior Jesse Bennett ran the 1,600 for only the third time and won handily in 4:54. Bennett also came away with a victory in the 800, running it in 2:10.

"That kid's got potential," Flathead distance coach Paul Jorgensen said.

Flathead's Duncan Aylor swept the hurdle races, winning the 110 in 16.5 and the 300 in 42.13.

The Braves were shorthanded due to spring break but will field a full squad next Tuesday when Flathead hosts a Class A Invitational at Legends Stadium. Glacier will also be competing.
