Glacier's Bates cruises in tennis opener

MISSOULA - Liana Bates finished Saturday's opening session on the tennis courts with a 2-0 record.

The Glacier standout looked to be in mid-season form, stopping Gigi Suarez of Helena 6-1, 6-1 and Michelle Thomas of Hellgate 6-2, 6-4.

The Glacier girls finished the day with a split in duals, blanking Helena 8-0 while falling to highly regarded Hellgate 7-1.

"Overall, very happy with the play of everybody," Glacier coach Josh Munro said.

"The girls lineup was very solid. The boys lineup much improved over last year."

The Glacier boys lost to Helena 6-2 and to a very talented Hellgate team 8-0.

Glacier's Phillip Phattharaampornchai and Patrick Phattharaampornchai both won at Nos. 1-2 singles, respectively, versus Helena.

Glacier's third dual outing, with Missoula Sentinel, was rained out.

"Twelve of the 16 matches were on the court," Munro said for that dual.

"They were just in the first set."

Flathead was also in action for the first time this season. FHS lost to Missoula Big Sky 8-0 in both boys and girls play. Flathead played Helena High, no results available, but was rained out against Helena Capital.

Flathead used seven Glacier players to fill its lineup card - Randy Glasgow in singles, Josh Taira and Brandon Doty in doubles, Cody Berger and Kyle Kyger in doubles, Forrest Goodloe and Andy Walling in doubles and Meagan Wilkinson, who played one match in singles and one in doubles.

Glacier hosts Bigfork on Monday, 1 p.m., and Bigfork then plays Flathead at 3:30.
