GREAT FALLS - Sophomore Brittany Franklin hit the first grand slam of her high school career to help the Glacier Wolfpack down Great Falls High 8-1 in Class AA softball action on Saturday.

The victory ensured a nonconference split for the Wolfpack, which fell 6-5 to C.M. Russell in the second game.

"(Franklin) hit the ball 250-260 feet. She crushed it, right over the center field fence," said Glacier head coach Joel Bemis.

Franklin's slam broke open a 1-0 game in the fourth inning.

"She pounded it," he smiled. Franklin finished the game with five RBIs.

As for the CMR contest, the Wolfpack hit the ball well and led the Rustlers 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.

"They just got some key hits, five hits in the bottom of the seventh. It's a little disapointing," Bemis said.

"But they beat us 18-2 last year. We battled. We've just got to learn how to finish. I was pretty proud of how they played in both games today," he said.

The Wolfpack (0-1, 1-3) will play host Tuesday to Missoula Sentinel and Missoula Big Sky at the Kidsport Complex.

"It was a pretty successful day. We battled and played (CMR) pretty well, I thought. We showed we can play with a couple of teams in the east. Hopefully, now we just continue to improve throughout our conference."

EUREKA - The Eureka Lions put Friday behind them and used Saturday as a new start.

So far, so good.

The Lions beat Florence in a Class B nonconference softball matchup for their first win of the season. The victory came a day after being swept by Mission at home.

"Today, they finally put it together and played very well. I was very proud of them," Eureka head coach Tom Shay said of the Lions. "They had one shaky inning there and they put it behind them."

Junior Steph Vogelman crushed a Florence pitch over the fence for a home run and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Eureka exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning.

Auna Lawler picked up the complete-game victory from the circle and went 2-3 batting for Eureka (1-2). Catcher Carly Hammond had a double in the game along with Mariah Newell and the Lions combined for 13 hits in the game.

Florence had only seven hits but remained within striking distance throughout.

"It was just neck and neck there. It was huge scoring seven in the fourth," said Shay, in his third year as coach.

On Friday, Eureka hosted a makeup doubleheader with Mission and had the unfortunate task of trying to hit off Mattea Grant. Grant finished the game with 18 strikeouts and only allowed a pair of hits by Eureka's Shyann Vandehey. Eureka also had 13 errors in the game and lost 11-0.

"She absolutely dominated every way you can imagine," Shay said of Grant. "That was a rough one."

In the second game, Grant took the mound again and kept her mastery going. She left the game in the third inning having held Eureka scoreless. Mission won the game 15-5 in six innings due to the 10-run rule.
