The Daily Inter Lake

The Whitefish Community Garden will launch its inaugural gardening season at an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 25. The public is invited.

Information on composting, recycling, gardening in the Flathead Valley, canning and water systems will be presented, according to a news release.

Children will be able to enjoy baby lambs and goats. There will be live music and local food product samples from the Youth Entrepreneurial and Philanthropic Project.

There also will be a raffle featuring garden-themed gift baskets to help raise money to assist in the construction of the community gardens.

Community members interested in renting plots will be able to register for their space, as well as tour the site and meet the organizing committee to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

The Whitefish Community Garden is on the grounds of the United Methodist Church on Wisconsin Avenue in Whitefish. Though the exact number of plots has not been designated, some plots will be reserved for low-income families. Raised-bed plots will be available in 6-by-12-foot sizes and can be rented for $50 to $75.

A community work day is planned May 9 and renters will have the opportunity to take part in building the community garden before actual planting can begin.

For questions about the open house or work day, or if you're interested in donating materials for the construction of the community garden, contact Mike or Jenny Henson at 863-9758.
