High marks, fast times at invite

You have to start somewhere, and the Whitefish boys track team is starting right where it left off last season - winning.

Senior Drew Coco earned victories in both the 1,600 and 3,200 while classmate and defending state champ Aaron Tkachyk won the long jump at the Class A Invitational track meet at Legends Stadium on Tuesday.

Kaleb Prestegaard also won the pole vault and qualified for state for defending champ Whitefish.

Although final team scores were not kept at the meet, Whitefish had 11 boys finish in the top five in its first meet of the season.

"We have some tested kids, that's our strength," Whitefish head coach Derek Schulz said. Only two seniors from last year's state championship team graduated.

The Whitefish girls team came out strong as well, displaying a number of familiar faces from the two-time defending state champion cross country teams.

"We have a lot of depth on the girls side and in the distance races," Schulz said. "That's huge for us."

On a lukewarm day, several other familiar faces took the field.

Polson's girls team, led by Breanne Kelley, appears to be eager to defend its Class A title as well. Kelley edged out Columbia Falls' McKenzie Reeve in the 300 hurdles with a winning time of 50.29. Kelley placed in four events at state last year as a freshman to lead Polson to its third state championship.

Libby senior Seth Wright, who won state in the triple jump as a sophomore and placed second last year, jumped 42-4 to win that event on Tuesday. He also won the javelin with a throw of 165-1.

At the high jump, Wright got near the Class A record when he attempted 6-8. On his third attempt at that height, Wright sprinted in from the grass and leaped up and over the bar. But at the last second, his heels knicked the bar and tipped it over. The class record is 6-10, set by Kral Ferch from Livingston in 1983.

Wright still won the event on Tuesday by clearing 6-6, which easily qualified him for the state meet. Glacier's Shane Freese placed second with a personal best of 6-6 as well. Defending state champ Colt Idol of Whitefish tied with Bigfork's Garrett Pewe for third place. Both made 6-2.

The state qualifying state is 6-2.

The Glacier girls won a total of 10 events, led by Maddey Frey, who came away with a pair of victories in the 100 and long jump. Frey's 100 time of 12.91 qualifies her for state. Emilee Hashley won the shot put with a throw of 36-8 1/2 and qualified for state as well. Another high jumper qualified as well: winner Chelsea Rosean. Second-place Stacy Pitt had already qualified last weekend along with Lexy Boschee.

Glacier's Taylor Graham won the boys 100 race and Jake Glasman took the top spot in the 400.

"We had a lot of bright spots," Glacier boys head coach Arron Deck said.

With this meet being the first competition this season for a majority of athletes, it couldn't be a bad day, Deck said.

"We had a lot of kids out on the track today," he said. "We're building and that's how you do it."

Flathead continues to build on its storied history with a group of fresh faces along with familiar ones.

Senior Heidi Windauer continued her spring success at the 100 hurdles, winning with a time of 16.97. That's faster than her winning time from last week, when she ran a 17.09.

Freshman Tess Brenneman won the 400 and missed the state qualifier by .04 of a second.

Luke Truman of Eureka won both the discus and the shot put on the boys side.
