Carlson wins, Vals take 2nd

BIGFORK - Kayla Carlson won the 1,600 and 3,200 races for the second year in a row at the Bigfork Invitational track meet on Saturday and helped the Valkyries place second overall.

The Bigfork junior notched a 12:06 time in the 3,200, which is the third fastest time in the state for girls. Darby's Heather Demorest holds the top time, 11:54.

Carlson ran 5:28 in the 1,600, which is six seconds faster than her winning time last year.

Bigfork sophomore Mallery Knoll picked up second-place finishes in the hurdles races and the Vals scored 64 points as a team.

The Florence girls won it with 73 points.

Eureka's Bailey Malecha won the 800 and placed second in the 400.

In the boys events, Libby's Seth Wright battled through an injured heel and picked up a victory in the triple jump. Wright also placed second in the high jump, third in the discus and fourth in the long jump.

The Libby boys placed fourth as a team with 47 points. Thompson Falls won it with 75.
