No B, just A vs. AA dual

| April 22, 2009 1:00 AM

The Daily Inter Lake

What was billed as the Class B Meet at Legends Stadium on Tuesday turned out to be a non-scoring dual between Class A Ronan and Class AA Flathead.

Those were the only two school to show up on a perfect day for a track meet.

With plenty of sunshine and the temperature flirting with the 80-degree mark, this was easily the best day of the spring season for runners, throwers and jumpers.

"The heat, for the first time, shocks kids," Flathead coach Dan Hodge said.

"For distance runners, it's too hot mentally.

"Too many kids like to sun bathe and exhaust themselves before the event," Hodge continued.

"The kids who have two and three years (of track experience) take advantage of the shade that's available."

Still, the weather was a blessing, considering snow is in the forecast later in the week.

"We were happy to have the meet on a beautiful day," Hodge said.

The Flathead boys 400 relay team - Calvin Athy, George Sherwood, Ian Damon and Andrew Esch - turned in their fastest time of the season, winning in 44.92.

Flathead's Mike VanArendonk matched the state qualifying mark in high jump by clearing 6-2. That was also good for first place.

Hodge said Jesse Bennett turned in his first 400, winning it in 52.62.

"We've been running him in the 800, 1,600," Hodge said.

"Today we had him run the 400 and he had a decent time. It shows he's a capable distance runner. He has some speed."

Flathead's Tyler Thomas doubled up with wins in the weight events, throwing the shot put 48-6 and the discus 125-4. Duncan Aylor won both hurdle races, 110 in 16.33 and 300 in 41.65.

Leif Castren, who won the Summit Classic 5K on Sunday in 17:37, turned around to win the 1,600 on Tuesday, 4:54.13.

Tess Brenneman led the FHS girls, winning the high jump, 5-0, and 200, 26.93.

Heidi Windauer had a busy day for the Bravettes, winning the 300 hurdles, 50.45, and placing second in 100 hurdles by six hundredths of a second.

The Flathead boys compete in the Swede Dahlberg Invitational on Saturday in Butte, while the FHS girls are at the Great Falls Invitational.
