Whitefish defeats Polson in softball

POLSON - The Lady Bulldogs girls settled the question of when Whitefish last beat Polson on the softball field, and they won't forget anytime soon.
Whitefish trailed five runs going into the sixth inning against Polson, but exploded for seven runs and went on to upset the Lady Pirates 14-11 in a Class A softball matchup on Thursday.
Nicole Shelling and Heather Bailey knocked in three runs apiece and Madison Tveidt added two for the Lady Bulldogs (2-4).
"The girls never gave up and they just bought in so much that if we hit, we can win and they just kept hitting," Whitefish coach Alan Compton said.
"It was a great game for them, I tip my hat to them," Polson coach Larry Smith said. "They really hit the ball solid. They must have had good bat warmers over there."
The Lady Bulldogs battled though poor weather and a six-run deficit after three innings to come back and beat conference-foe Polson (5-1), who has won four state titles since 2001, for the first time in awhile.
"We needed that win to help with our conference standings but also to get in state," Compton said. "That was a huge win for us."
Whitefish catcher Hailey Mortenesen had a pair of doubles and finished 2-4 while Carolyn Sharpe went the distance from the mound to earn the victory.
In her first varsity start, Callie Marsh sealed up the second-base side defensively and went 1-2 in the batters box.
Whitefish heads to Frenchtown tomorrow for a two-day tourney while Polson faces undefeated Havre at home.
