On the bright side, it didn't snow.

But even if it had, both Glacier and Flathead track teams would have been ready for it at the second annual cold and cloudy crosstown dual at Legends Stadium on Tuesday.

The Flathead boys team clipped Glacier by only seven points to win 76-69 while the Wolfpack girls stormed to a 94-51 victory thanks to a strong showing in the field events. Both Flathead teams won last year's dual.

"It's always nice to win a rivalry competition, but we didn't make much of it," Flathead coach Dan Hodge said of the boys victory. "With the way the season has been going, it was just really nice to have a meet."

For the second year in a row, the crosstown dual was a race to get back into warm clothing between competition. Like they have most of spring, athletes battled through gusting winds and temperatures around or below 40 degrees while the forecasted snow storm appeared to be closing in.

"It's Montana weather, you just gotta get used to it," Glacier junior Taylor Hart said, donning a ski cap and bundled in layers of clothing after finishing second in the boys 200.

Hart echoed the general feeling of the meet, which was looking on the bright side.

"It was nice. I had a tail wind at the end," he said of the 400, which he won.

In the 100, Flathead's Ian Damon came within a quick gust, or .05 seconds, of qualifying for state with a winning time of 11.38. Jesse Bennett won both the 800 and 1,600, while Duncan Aylor swept the hurdles events for the Braves, who trailed by two points after seven events before coming back to win.

Before the girls 1,600, Glacier's Heather Fraley warmed up wearing a brown ski jacket.

"I brought it just in case," said Fraley.

It paid off, and Fraley went on to win the 1,600 and 3,200.

The Glacier girls swept the field events, led by Lexy Boschee winning the high and triple jumps.

Flathead senior Heidi Windauer, wearing a pair of wool gloves, said she preferred racing on an overcast day, and it showed in the 100 hurdles. Windauer won and nearly qualified for state.

The showdown of the day was between two of the state's best sprinters, Flathead's Tess Brenneman and Glacier's Maddey Frey. The 100 came down to a photo finish between the pair, with Brenneman winning by one one-hundredth of a second. Brenneman went on to win the 200 with a 26.46, one of the top times in the state.
