Glacier National Park

| August 5, 2009 12:00 AM

A boater whose kayak capsized in choppy water was rescued from Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Public Affairs Officer Amy Vanderbilt said the boater was "warm and ambulatory and doing as well as can be expected for having spent some time in water." She said the man was wearing a wet suit and life jacket when his kayak went down.

The man's name, age and city were not yet available Tuesday evening.

Vanderbilt said wind kicked up on the lake around mid-afternoon, creating waves that were several feet high at times. She estimated that search efforts started around 4:30 or 5 p.m.

Details still were sketchy because of a radio silence that was in place during the search efforts, she said, but the boater apparently was spotted on or near the lake and spent some time on shore near Sprague Creek Campground. She did not yet know how the park originally was notified of his disappearance, but Minute Man helicopters, a majority of the Lake McDonald field staff and other available field staff from the park helped in the efforts.

She estimated a dozen or more searchers were in the water, in the air and on the shoreline.
