George A. Mitchell, 84

George A. Mitchell, 84, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at the Montana Veterans Home in Columbia Falls. He was born on Nov. 14, 1924, in Great Falls, the son of Alexander and Frances (Tietjen) Mitchell.

George graduated from high school in 1942 and left for the Navy Boot Camp right after graduation. He was a radioman and gunman on the (B-17) Flying Fortresses and (B-24) Liberators where he flew many missions in the Pacific.

In the 1950s, his family moved from Great Falls to homestead in Trego. In 1963, George married the love of his life, Renate Reisinger. She passed away in 1990. George remained a widower.

He retired in 1985 from the Forest Service where he worked at the Murphy Lake Ranger Station for 25 years. George was a self-educated man who like many that grew up farming and ranching, could fix or build just about anything. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Renate; his parents; and his younger brother, Don.

He is survived by his son, John, and his wife, Maria, and their children, Daniel and Uli; and his daughter, Tina, and husband, Ernie, and their children, Tammy, Ernie and Terri. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Glacier Memorial Gardens.
