Ballard leads Mid-Am golf

BILLINGS - Jeff Ballard of Billings shot a 6-under 66 to take the first-round lead in the 23rd annual Montana State Mid-Amateur golf tournament on Thursday at Briarwood Country Club.

Five shots back is Dave Earnes, also of Billings.

Brandon Davison of Billings opened with a 72 to hold down third place, followed by Parker Heller of Helena, 73, and Cory Slocum of Missoula and Paul Kunst of Forsyth, both with 74s.

Mark Mance of Whitefish had the best showing for local golfers, carding a 79.

The 54-hole event runs through Saturday.
