Glacier and Flathead high schools are providing open houses before school starts to give students a chance to pay fees, pick up schedules and, especially if they're new to the schools, familiarize themselves with the buildings.

Glacier High School's Student Jamboree is from noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 17 and 18. Students don't have to make appointments first, but school officials recommend setting aside at least 90 minutes.

During the open house, students pick up their free I.D. cards, parking decals, schedules and handbooks. They also may buy activity tickets for $20 and yearbooks for $60; both will be on sale throughout the school year.

Students taking physical education must wear the Glacier P.E. uniform, on sale for $12 at the student store.

The jamboree is also a good time to add money to food-court accounts so students may use their I.D. cards as debit cards to pay for lunches. Paperwork for the free and reduced-price meal program will be available.

Students will check out textbooks and find their classrooms and lockers.

Glacier freshmen are the first to go back to school. Their first day is Aug. 26. All other Glacier students go back to school Aug. 27.

Flathead High School offers back-to-school open houses at four times, one for each grade level.

Seniors' open house is from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 20. Freshmen go from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 20. Juniors' open house is from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 21, and sophomores go from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 21.

There are several stations at the open house. Students - except seniors - get their school pictures taken in the auditorium's main lobby. They purchase their $20 activity tickets, good for admission to all school sporting events, in the main office.

Students may pay most of their fees and purchase yearbooks online using a system new to the school this year. School apparel will be on sale in the commons during the open house. Students get their lockers during open house, except for freshmen, who get theirs on the first day of school.

Freshman Day is Aug. 26 to help ease the transition from eighth grade. Students must participate in Freshman Day; attendance will be taken.

All other Flathead students go back to school Aug. 27.
