The first major snowstorm of the season descended on the Flathead Valley this weekend, producing snowscapes such as this outside Whitefish. The National Weather Service measured nine inches of snow in the valley, although in some areas of Northwest Montana the snow was deeper.

Kalispells elementary and high school districts face a potential budget shortfall of $889,000 to $1.1 million in 2010-11. School district administrators and school board trustees will decide over the next few months how to handle the shortfall, whether by cutting programs or personnel, asking voters to approve an extra tax levy or both.
