Glacier's Mitchell captures mat title

GREAT FALLS — Kaleb Mitchell (98) breezed through his weight class at the 32nd annual CMR Holiday Classic wrestling tournament until pulling out a tough decision in the finale to claim individual honors.

The Glacier freshman went 4-0 in the two-day event and was the lone individual champion for the Wolfpack.

“All the top-ranked kids in AA (at 98) were here,” Glacier coach Mark Fischer said.

“The Senior kid was No. 1, the Skyview kid he beat in the finals was No. 2. He really made a name for himself here.”

Mitchell, 11-1 on the season, beat Justin Waterson of Skyview in the final, 3-2.

“He has a funky style, but he really gets after it out there,” Fischer said of his champ.

Mitchell, Grant Tafoya (112), Boyce Ballard (189) and Dan Gilbert (285) were Glacier’s four semifinalists on Saturday.

“We only got Kaleb through (to the finals),” Fischer said.

“This tournament is tougher than I’ve ever seen it.”

Gilbert wound up finishing third, while Tafoya and Ballard both placed sixth.

Shane St. Onge (140) finished fourth for the Wolfpack.

“We had a number of kids that were just a few matches away,” Fischer said of placing.

“One kid that standouts out, who really wrestled well, was Logan Clay. He had a great tournament.”

Clay (171) pinned his way into the quarterfinals, where he lost a tough 5-1 decision.

On the team front, Glacier (137) finished fourth, its best finish ever at this event. Havre (198 1/2) won the team title for the fourth straight year.

Ronan had one individual champion — Cameron Neiss (135). He pinned Cody West of CMR in the final in 5:18.
