Six local players grace West roster for Shrine football game

Columbia Falls, Glacier and Polson high schools have two athletes each named to the West football roster for the 64th Annual Montana East-West Shrine Game next summer.

Quarterback Mitchell Wassam and guard Mike Macijunas are from Columbia Falls, quarterback Shay Smithwick-Hann and center Jake Criner are from Glacier, and inside linebacker Tim Rausch and outside linebacker Brock Picard are from Polson.

Players from Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Glacier, Eureka, Libby, Polson and Whitefish were named as alternates.

Wassam, Macijunas, Rausch and Picard were all named to the Class A all-state first team.

Rausch was named Northwestern A’s MVP on offense (fullback) and defense. He shared the league MVP defensive honors with Picard.

Criner and Smithwick-Hann were both second-team all-state selections in Class AA.

The game features the top graduating seniors from around the state. The 2010 game will be played in Butte on July 17.

The West defeated the East 20-17 on July 18 in Great Falls in overtime. That marked the first overtime game in series history and snapped a five-game losing streak for West.

The East leads the series 36-27.
