Basketball roundup: Eureka blows by Plains, 49-34

PLAINS - Mariah Newell scored 22 points and Steph Vogelman 13 as Eureka dropped St. Ignatius 49-34 in District 7B girls basketball play on Saturday.

Newell and Vogelman also had 11 rebounds apiece.

Eureka, 6-1 league and 8-8 overall, jumped on the Trotters early, leading 15-8 and 23-17 after the first two quarter stops. The Lions outscored the hosts 10-5 in the third frame to take control.

Carli Hammond led the Lions with seven steals and seven assists. The Lions host Polson on Friday, visit Troy on Saturday.

Plains, 1-5 and 3-11, was led by Emma Ehret's 13 points.

POLSON - Sierra Pete hit a field goal from the corner with 1:46 to play to put Polson in front for keeps as the Pirates handed Northwestern A leader Columbia Falls its first league loss of the season.

Pete, who finished with six points, also hit two free throws down the stretch along with Cali Hislop.

Breanne Kelley paced Polson offensively with eight points. Kelsey DeWit led Columbia Falls with 11.

"A big win," Polson coach Randy Kelley said.

"A good defensive game both ways."

Nicole Davey's nine rebounds was a Polson best, and Rochelle Woods had a team-high four steals.

Polson moves to 4-3 in league, 8-7 overall. Columbia Falls slips to 6-1 and 8-6.

BIGFORK - Roxy Thurman led the way with 18 points and the Bigfork Valkyries rallied after a rough first quarter to beat St. Ignatius in a nonconference game.

Mallery Knoll scored 16 points and Kailey Fierro had five points and eight rebounds for the Vals, who trailed 11-7 after the first quarter.

But after that, Bigfork, 9-7 overall, 3-2 in conference, came out inspired and scored double-figures in the three remaining quarters. Quinci Paine chipped in eight points in the Bigfork turnaround.

Mattea Grant had 14 points for St. Ignatius, 10-6, 5-1, and Katie McDonald and Jonna Grant each had seven.

WHITEFISH - Colt Idol and Aaron Tkachyk combined for nearly half of Whitefish's points as the Bulldogs pushed their win streak to nine games with a nonconference victory over Frenchtown.

Idol led all scorers with 17 points. Tkachyk finished with 14.

Marc Hotzfield was Whitefish's top rebounder, 11, while Matt Whitehead led in assists, five, and steals, three.

Whitefish, 11-4 overall, led 28-14 at the half. The Bulldogs put the game away with a 26-point third period.

"Alex Elespuru came off the bench in the second half and gave us a real big pick up," Whitefish coach Eric Stang said.

"He got us going to where we had a really good third quarter."

This was Elespuru's third game back following a wrist injury.

BIGFORK - Bigfork trailed just once, 8-7, but dominated after that in collecting a nonconference victory over St. Ignatius.

Bigfork, 2-11, exploded for 23 points in the third period to take control.

Brock Boll tallied 12 points for Bigfork and Scott Taylor followed with 11.

"A good team victory," Bigfork coach Lyle Whiteman said.

"We had a sluggish beginning, but picked up the intensity for the most part after the first 4-5 minutes."

Lael Richmond pulled down 10 rebounds for Bigfork and Boll had six boards.

Garrett Pewe led in assists with five.

PLAINS - A huge scoring night by Ben Dechart wasn't enough as Plains held off Eureka in District 7B play.

Dechart poured in 27 points to pace Eureka. Marcus Pluid was next with 12.

Trent Thompson had 23 points for Plains.

Eureka, leading 33-28 at the break, was outscored 29-15 in the final half.

Eureka falls to 3-4 in league, 3-12 overall.

MISSOULA - Jesse Ginn scored with less then a second to go on a putback to force overtime and Hellgate went on to collect a Western AA victory.

Hellgate, 2-5 league and 4-10 overall, outscored Flathead, 1-5, and 2-12, 13-8 in the extra session.

"The first half, it was real tentative on offense," Flathead coach Fred Febach said.

"Neither team was doing much. In the second half, we played better, were more aggressive on offense."

Karl Ingram had 21 points to lead Flathead. Tanner Salois was next with 11.

Travis Peevey, who put Hellgate in front for good in OT with a trey, finished with 16 points.

"The effort and the heart is there," Febach said.

"We just need to be a little more solid down the stretch."
