Western AA tourney ends with exciting heavyweight match
Nobody left.
And they're probably all glad they didn't.
Because everyone who saw Flathead's Tyler Thomas take on Helena's Toby Erickson in Saturday's heavyweight championship at the Western AA seeding tournament at Glacier High School watched a heckuva battle.
Erickson, taking on both Thomas and a partisan crowd, barely edged the Flathead senior, 5-3.
"It just gets closer every time I wrestle him. I'm starting to figure out what he does," Thomas said.
"I definitely need to do a little cardio work to get my lungs under me a bit. But other than that, just work on not making mistakes and wait for him to make mistakes, I think is the game plan," he said.
"It was just a really close match. A couple things go my way and I'm looking to beat him at state," Thomas said.
"Tiny's match was a great match," said Flathead coach Matt Owen.
"Tyler made just one little error on the sideline, but other than that, he wrestled great. I think we're going to get (Erickson) at state. But it's tough. That kid is really big and it's really hard to get stuff to work like it usually does because (Erickson) is a physical kid," Owen said.
The heavyweight match was just one in a daylong series of hard-fought matches.
The Braves, who had a rough start to the tournament, bounced back Saturday to finish with 11 finalists and eight champions. Flathead will take 25 wrestlers to next weekend's state tournament in Billings.
The Glacier Wolfpack, no slouch either, wound up with five finalists and one champion. It will take 22 wrestlers to the state tournament.
Glacier's champion was John Frandsen (215). Finalists were Zach Barber (98), Cooper Sipe (119), Shane St. Onge (135), and Larry Francis (152).
Brave champs are Zach Reimnitz (105), Alejandro Calderon (119), Joaquin Calderon (125), Shawn Lau (130), Tanner Beaman (135), Caleb Allen-Schmid (145), Ryan Thiel (152) and Bryce Stacy (160).
Finalists were Dan Jenkins (140), Ian Damon (171) and Thomas.
"We're all wrestling really tough," said Flathead senior Tanner Beaman.
"We're getting in good position, being able to execute our moves perfectly," he said.
Friday "was all right. But today we were able to shake that off, get it going and fire each other up," Beaman said.
"We had a great day. The finals round was awesome and not just the finals, the third-fourth and fifth-sixth matches," Owen said.
"We did a really good job. I think we're really set up to do really good at state.
"I think all those guys who won in the finals wrestled great," he added.
As for Glacier, the end of the day saw a smile on the face of head coach Mark Fischer.
"We feel very fortunate with what happened this weekend," he said.
"We couldn't be more pleased going into the state tournament," he said.
"Our freshmen, we could not be more proud of these nine kids who are going with us. They've all stepped up the last couple weeks. And not just the freshmen, they all battled hard for us. Our coaching staff all feel real fortunate for the kids we have," he added.
Frandsen agreed with the coach.
"We had St. Onge, Larry and our little 98-pounder Zach Barber in the finals and they all did good. They all fought and they had some tough kids," Frandsen said.
Frandsen's championship match with Sentinel's Bentley Alsup was a highlight for the Wolfpack.
"It was a lot shorter than I thought it would be," the senior said.
"I thought it would go all three and come down to points. We were all expecting it to be close."
He and Alsup had battled three times before - Alsup had won two of them.
But this time, Frandsen caught Alsup in a head and arm and pinned him in 1:13.
"Head and arm. It's what he got me in both times, so I was glad that I got him in that," he smiled.
"That (win) was definitely a good thing for John," Fischer said.
"Right now on the East side, John has beaten everybody except the (Billings' Skyview kid. He hasn't wrestled him yet," Fischer said.
"That kid (Justin Prevost) is probably the No. 1 kid," the coach said.
Frandsen's Western AA win puts him on the opposite side of the bracket from Prevost.
"Not to take anybody lightly, but if John wrestles as well as he can, I think he's looking pretty well," Fischer said.
