Glacier considering Logan Pass projects
The Daily Inter Lake
Glacier National Park officials are seeking public comments on a plan for improvements at Logan Pass.
An environmental assessment is available for public review until March 13, according to a news release from Glacier.
As one of the most visited destinations in Glacier, the pass at elevation 6,646 feet offers visitors hiking opportunities, scenic views, wildlife viewing opportunities, a visitor center, a shuttle stop and parking.
The Logan Pass Improvements Environmental Assessment addresses a variety of issues at this popular location atop the Continental Divide.
The study evaluates a "no-action" alternative along with three other alternatives that address restroom facilities, power requirements and transportation arrangements.
The existing restrooms in the visitor center are in poor condition and do not provide enough capacity. The shuttle stop in front of the visitor center has resulted in congestion and confusion.
The Logan Pass Visitor Center power comes from an outdated propane generator system that is at risk of permanent failure and cannot be repaired. In addition to updating the generator, additional electricity is needed at Logan Pass for visitor services, park operations, security, communications and the shuttle system.
The park's preferred alternative seeks to improve restrooms, accessibility and capacity issues.
It proposes construction of five additional restrooms adjacent to the parking lot that also would be open during the shoulder season when other facilities at Logan Pass are closed.
It recommends replacing the power system with a more environmentally friendly propane generator system that would have the capacity and provide additional energy for radio, security and the transit system.
The preferred alternative also proposes a shuttle stop renovation near the northwest entrance to the parking lot.
