Eureka girls advance to Western B semis with Loyola

PABLO - Eureka opened Western B divisional girls basketball tournament play on Wednesday with a 47-39 victory over Deer Lodge at the Salish Kootenai Athletic Center.
Eureka, 12-9 overall, and Deer Lodge, 9-13, were deadlocked at 23-all at the half.
The Lions outscored Deer Lodge 14-9 in the third period and then held on for the remainder of play.
Mariah Newell had 19 rebounds and 18 points for Eureka.
Carli Hammond added 10 points, a career high, and teammate Auna Lawler also totaled 10.
Hammond also had six steals.
Danni Johnson finished with 11 points for Deer Lodge.
"We didn't get rattled," Eureka coach John Hammond said.
"We ran a lot of time off in the fourth quarter and were patient. We knew we wanted to run the clock."
It was the first win this season for Eureka at the athletic center in three tries.
Eureka advances to semifinal play today at 4 p.m. against Missoula Loyola, 17-4. The Heart Breakers defeated Plains in first-round action 72-32.
Deer Lodge and Plains battle in a loser-out contest at 12:30 p.m.
"As a team, everybody that stepped on the court gave us quality minutes," Hammond said.
"We just looked fresher than we did last Saturday night at the district championship."
Eureka lost that game 47-46 to Thompson Falls.

PABLO - Alex Mitchell scored 17 points and Reid Boerlocher 16 as Florence downed Eureka 60-41 on Wednesday in opening-round play of the boys Western B divisional basketball tournament at the Salish Kootenai Athletic Complex.
Florence, 15-6, led 15-5 after eight minutes of play and 34-18 at the half.
"Their guard play was the difference," Eureka coach Chad Dunn said. "It was their strength against our weakness."
Dunn said Eureka had six turnovers in the opening quarter.
Marcus Pluid had a big game for Eureka, 5-16, scoring 17 points. He was the lone Lion to reach double figures. Ben Dechart was next with eight.
Eureka falls into loser-out play today at 9 a.m. versus Deer Lodge, 12-11.
