Glacier 2nd, Flathead JV 3rd in Western Mt. Duals

The Daily Inter Lake

RONAN - Not too shabby. Not too shabby, by any means.

The Glacier Wolfpack and the Flathead JV were both among the top three teams at this weekend's Western Montana Duals at Ronan.

Host Ronan defeated Glacier in the championship, 41-38, and Flathead JV downed Polson 50-29 for third place.

"We couldn't be more proud," said Glacier head coach Mark Fischer.

"We were just so proud of the way the kids wrestled this weekend. They wrestled with heart. They represented our school with class," he said.

Glacier started the day with a 51-24 win over Columbia Falls. The Wolfpack then met Flathead JV, a 56-28 winner over Libby, in the semifinals.

The Wolfpack got the better of that one, 49-32.

Glacier JV fell 36-30 to Arlee, 42-33 to Florence, 60-30 to Polson and 60-21 to Hamilton.

The Wolfpack built a big lead on the Chiefs in the championship - the dual started at Glacier's strength, the heavier half of the lineup.

But when the dual got to the lighter weights, Ronan caught back up.

"There were a couple times where we just got caught and pinned," Fischer said.

"There were so many different ways we could have won that dual. It's a bummer, but you can't be angry about it.

"Both teams, they just came out and came to win. Our kids came to win. Their kids came to win. They just ended up on top a few more times than we did," he said.

Fischer saw more emotion after that dual than he has before as Glacier's head coach.

Not only were there hugs, but he also saw tears, the coach said.

"This is the first dual that meant that much to them," he said.

"Every kid deserves kudos for how they wrestled.

"They learned they can compete with anybody. These kids battled with every single person they went out there with. They don't care who they are wrestling. That's so fun to watch," he said.

Both the Wolfpack and Flathead JV found the Western Montana Duals helpful.

"For our kids with their youth, just getting that mat time … they got six matches here. It was a great weekend for getting experience and Northwestern A is quality for wrestling. To go toe to toe with those teams is kind of an honor," Fischer said.

Although the Wolfpack JV finished the weekend 1-5, Glacier JV coach Mark Armstrong liked a lot of what he saw.

"We have a lot of forfeits. We didn't start wrestling until 135, but from 135 on up, we were solid. We were competing. We just couldn't make up for the forfeits," Armstrong said.

"Ronan ran a great tournament," said Flathead JV coach Rich Evans.

"Everything kept moving and moving. It was great.

"This is a good showing for our kids. It's really setting them up for state, so we can fill in with our varsity," he said.

"Our kids wrestled pretty strong today. They really stepped up," he said.

The semifinal against Glacier was the first loss of the season for Flathead.

"Glacier is really up and coming. They're coached well and they have a great group of kids," he said.

"But these guys are great. They bounced back. They stepped right back up and wrestled hard.

"Polson really wrestled us strong," he added.

Flathead forfeited both 130 and 135 to the Pirates.

"It's kind of tough to give them 12 points off the bat," Evans said.

Sophomores Caleb Piasecki and Connor Thomas led the way for the Braves.

Piasecki, normally at 105, went up to 112 and still pinned every opponent he faced this past weekend - all in the first period.

Thomas also finished the weekend with six wins - five pins and one forfeit.

Both the Wolfpack and Flathead travel next weekend to Missoula for the Rocky Mountain Classic.
