The Glacier High School swim team, led by double winner Phil Rempe, captured the team title in a five-team meet on Saturday at The Summit.

Glacier flirted with the 300-point barrier, scoring 294 points to finish well ahead of runner-up Missoula Big Sky/Loyola, who totaled 184.

Missoula Hellgate, 164, finished four points ahead of Flathead in claiming third place.

It was the first swim meet for all the schools since the holiday break. The last outing for Flathead and Glacier was a relay meet Dec. 20 in Great Falls.

"Just getting back in the water was good," Brandon Rannebarger, who coaches Glacier and Flathead swim teams, said.

"A lot of them were gone for Christmas, so that made it difficult coming back."

Despite the long break, Rannebarger was pleased with the showing by both schools.

"The Glacier boys are phenomenal right now," he said.

"The Flathead boys are equally phenomenal although they have lost five boys (who quit because of the early morning practice sessions). Those (boys' were on scoring relays. That really, really hurts."

Rannebarger said he also used this meet to "tweak" the relays.

"See who will be swimming them at state," he said.

Rempe had the best times in the 100 butterfly (55:00) and 100 backstroke (59.84). He was the only swimmer to break a minute in both events. His margin of victory in the 100 butterfly was 8 1/2 seconds.

Brian Hoffman gave the Wolfpack another first-place effort, winning the 500 freestyle (5:53.03).

The Flathead boys had one individual winner - Jacob Berry in the 50 freestyle (23.35) - and picked up a first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.75) with Berry, Michael Scaccia, Lars Thorderson and Ben Mason.

Glacier and Flathead dominated the 100 butterfly, snapping up five of the six places. Glacier's Brian Hoffman was second and Phillip Phattharaamporncia fourth, while Flathead's John Zorn and Luis Silva finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Things were much tighter on the team front in the girls competition. Missoula Sentinel came out on top, 270 1/2, followed by Missoula Hellgate, 237, and Glacier, 233 1/2.

Flathead was fifth, 119.

The Bravettes claimed one first-place finish. That came in the 200 medley relay (2:01.30) with Liz Kruse, Anika Thorderson, Ashley Judd and Karolina Tvrznikova.

Rannebarger said Glacier's Claire Morison 'second in 100 butterfly), Rempe (100 butterfly), Berry (50 freestyle) all swam really well, as did Glacier's Kelsey Iblings 'second in 100 breaststroke) and Samantha King 'second in the 50 freestyle), and Flathead's Ashley Judd (third in the 100 breaststroke).

"We got a lot of seconds, thirds and so on; kids picking up a lot of places in a lot of events," Rannebarger said.

"That was nice to see."

Glacier and Flathead are both off next weekend. The next swim meet for both schools is the Missoula Invitational on Jan. 24.
