WHITEFISH - Libby coach Kelly Morford called Wes Sherman's shot a "backbreaker."

Sherman ripped a three-run homer to left center with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bitterroot Red Sox a 6-5 advantage. Bitterroot added two more runs in the eighth en route to an 8-5 loser-out victory on Sunday at the Western A District American Legion baseball tournament.

Bitterroot's two baserunners in the eighth inning both reach on walks before Sherman stepped into the batter's box.

Libby jumped in front 3-0 after the first inning and added a run in the fifth and seventh innings.

"The kids fought hard during the tournament, did everything they could," Morford said.

"It just didn't happen for us at the end, I guess."

Libby went 3-2 in tournament play with both losses to the Red Sox. Bitterroot won the earlier meeting 13-7.

The Loggers wrapped up the season with a 29-23 record.

Libby outhit the Red Sox, 9-8. Libby's Colt Cannon and Micah Germany both went 2-for-4, as did Sherman and Ryan Weigle for the Red Sox.

The win advanced Bitterroot to the championship game versus Mission Valley. Those two teams move on to state play, starting Thursday, in Three Forks.

Libby advanced to Sunday's action with a late-night victory Saturday over the Bitterroot Bucs, 21-14.

The Loggers finished second in league play.
