POLSON - The winning tradition of the Mission Valley Mariners seems to be returning.
The Mariners swept the Missoula Mavericks A squad in an American Legion conference doubleheader at O'Malley Field.
In the opener, Tim Rausch hit a pair of home runs and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Mission Valley the 7-6 extra-inning victory. Pitcher Josh Rustad picked up the victory to improve to 3-0.
In the nightcap, starter Ryan Bagnell continued his dominance from the mound this season and struck out eight batters and held Missoula to four hits as Mission Valley won 3-2. Bagnell hiked his record to 6-1.
Seven-year coach Jami Hanson said the Mariners (20-16 overall, 6-2 in conference) are beginning to mesh as a team and it shows in tight ballgames against proven teams like Missoula.
"A lot of heart, they played with a lot of heart and they didn't give up tonight at all," Hanson said of the Mariners. "Typically in the past we've shown that through our team's leadership and I've been waiting for it to happen this season."
Matt Detwiler followed Rausch's home run in the opener with one of his own and finished 2-for-5. Rausch finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Chris Alfiero went 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, Josh Rustad had a two-run home run in the first and Justin Evertz finished 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Mariners have now won five of the past six games. Only five starters from last year's 53-12 team return. In 2007, Mission Valley won state.
"We're trying to get some of that tradition to carry over to this squad," Hanson said.
The Mariners face Helena today at 5 p.m. in a home doubleheader.
