Badrock Fire Department

| March 18, 2009 1:00 AM

Firefighters were called to extinguish flames in the kitchen of a home on the 300 block of Michels Slough Road southeast of Columbia Falls. The blaze, which was reported about 9 p.m. Monday, was caused by cooking oil on a stove, Badrock Fire Department Capt. Lincoln Chute said. The two people inside the house when the fire started were not injured.

Most of the flames, which damaged the home's kitchen and living room, had already been put out when emergency personnel arrived. Firefighters extinguished any hot spots and vented the home of smoke, Chute said.

"Kitchen fires cause a lot of structure fires, so it really was a good outcome for everyone on the incident," said Chute, who estimated the damage at about $5,000. "It definitely could have been a lot worse."
