The Fair-Mont-Egan school board trustee election was a tight race this year, with three men vying for two three-year terms.

Incumbent Steven Knoll was re-elected Tuesday, securing 77 votes. Andrew Goolden and Jerrold Moon were tied after the votes were counted Tuesday, with 65 votes apiece.

The tie still stood after the school board recounted the ballots at a meeting Wednesday.

According to an attorney with the Montana School Boards Association, the board had to appoint one of the candidates to the board.

Trustees appointed Goolden to the board for one year, District Clerk Susan Clanton said.

Next spring, the remaining two years of the term will be on the ballot again, Clanton said. Goolden may run again if he wants to remain on the board.
