Bates inching closer

Glacier's Liana Bates dropped another match in No. 1 singles play to Ellie Crum of Great Falls High on Saturday at the Flathead Invitational.
Crum, who has never lost to Bates in prep or USTA play, had to work a little harder this time, however, to claim a 6-2, 6-2 at the courts at Flathead Valley Community College.
"This was definitely an improvement," Bates said.
"It felt close. The match scores don't show how close it was, really."
Bates came into the one-day event with a 15-1 mark. The lone loss was to Crum.
"Six-one, 6-2," Bates said of the earlier meeting with her friendly rival.
Bates said she opted for a different game plan for this matchup, and at times, it worked.
"Trying to slice (the ball) more, and drop shots," she said.
"And go to the net."
Bates and Crum put on quite a show, which featured several long rallies. Bates was consistent with her shots during the back-and-forth sessions, but Crum often found the net, or was too long with her shots.
"She's very consistent," Bates said of Crum.
"I just need to find the right shot to put it away. I try not to dwell on it (bad shots' too much."
Bates did make Crum work the entire baseline, which several times worked to Bates' advantage.
"I'm just trying to get more consistent," Bates said.
Bates, a sophomore, will get another shot at Crum, a junior, this weekend at divisional play in Great Falls. The two will most likely face off again at state in Bozeman the end of the month.
Bates and Crum both advanced to Saturday's final by winning earlier matches by 8-0, 8-0 scores.
