Glacier wins Archie Roe

On the day before Mother's Day, Troy's Aaron Palmer got the best advice from who else, his mom.

"Right before I threw, she just said, 'Relax,'" said the senior javelin thrower.

After that, Palmer went out and threw the javelin farther than anyone else in the state.

The winning throw of 205-4 was one foot short of tying the meet record at the 35th annual Archie Roe Invitational track meet on a sunny Saturday.

Everyone at Legends Stadium got their time in the spotlight and probably got a good sunburn along with it.

The Glacier boys and Missoula Big Sky girls stole the show in a field of 17 teams and roughly 1,000 competitors.

The Big Sky girls totaled 126 points to win for the second year in a row.

The Wolfpack cruised with 108 points and had four first-place finishes - Ben Cutler (200, 400), Dan Burfeind (3,200) and Kyle Montini (triple jump). The Glacier boys more than tripled their score of 33 points from last year and had four more athletes qualify for state.

"We'll take it," Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. "The seniors provided some good leadership out there. It's a good place to be."

Burfeind showed fans and teammates how to win the 3,200 race the hard way, not that there's any other way. In the first lap, Burfeind found himself boxed in almost 10 people behind the lead runner and spent the next seven laps earning the comeback. In the final stretch, he caught Flathead's Leif Castren, and for the first time all race, had no one to look at in front.

"That's where you get tough and gut it out," said Burfeind, who went on to win by 12 seconds.

The Glacier girls earned second place with 82 points and had victories in the 400 relay and long jump, which freshman Lexy Boschee won at 5-4.

Flathead, a longtime winner on the boys side, took third with 64 points and received first-places from Jesse Bennett (800) and Duncan Aylor (110 hurdles).

The Bravettes finished fourth with 39 points. Freshman Tess Brenneman maxed out her state plans after a 16-8 3/4 leap in the long jump that qualified her for state. That makes five events that Brenneman has qualified in, the most allowed.

The Whitefish boys, the Class A defending state champions, tied for fourth overall but took first among Class A teams with 42 points. Aaron Tkachyk kept hold of the top spot in the long jump for the second year in a row. The defending state champion has lost only once in the long jump in the last two years, he said. Whitefish distance runner Drew Coco ran away with the 1,600 title for the second straight year as well.

Polson's Loni Havlovick won the girls shot put to lead the defending state champion Pirates to a fifth-place finish overall.

The lone meet record to fall on Saturday was in the girls 400. Missoula Sentinel's Chantelle Grey needed every last inch of the track to beat Brenneman. Both girls passed the old record, but Grey's winning time of 57.29 replaced former Polson runner Kasey Harwood's 2004 time of 58.3. Brenneman ran a 58.17.

Missoula Sentinel's Lindsey Hall won four events on the day (100 and 300 hurdles, triple and long jump). Cut Bank's Deni Fitzpatrick won both the girls 100 and 200.
