Polson blasts Butte Central

| May 10, 2009 1:00 AM

The Daily Inter Lake

BUTTE - Charlee Jensen improved her record to 6-0 and the Polson Pirate softball team had four home runs by three different players as they knocked off host Butte Central 7-2 at the 2009 LaVerne Combo Invitational.

Sarah Newton hit two homers for the Pirates, Jensen had one and Riley Kenney had one. Newton and Kenney hit back-to-back homers in the first inning as the Pirates got off to 3-0 lead.

"(Jensen) pitched a beautiful game," said Pirate head coach Larry Smith.

Polson (14-3, 6-1) finished the tournament with a loss, however. Despite a home run by Dakota Peterson, a triple by Newton and a double by Staci Benson, it fell 4-3 to Belgrade.

"We left 10 baserunners. We'd get kids on base, but they couldn't get them in," Smith said.

The Pirates also committed three errors in that game, which led to Panther runs, the coach said.

"Belgrade is a very, very good team," he added.

"Overall, I feel very well about the weekend. We did really well," Smith said.

The Pirates take on Columbia Falls at 6 p.m. Thursday in Polson.
